NEEA’s residential initiatives help accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient products, practices and services in the Northwest. NEEA and its partners have made great strides in accelerating the adoption of energy-efficient homes in the Northwest, while also helping to influence more efficient energy standards in state building codes. Following are some updates on what NEEA and its partners are doing to save energy and maximize energy efficiency in residential homes to meet the region’s future needs.

Locking in long-term savings through residential building codes
Between 1978 and 2008 the Northwest saved nearly 4,000 aMW of energy through energy efficiency, the equivalent of powering nearly four cities the size of Seattle annually. More than one third of those savings resulted from increases in building energy codes. NEEA and its partners contribute to these savings by advancing more stringent building codes, and by providing education and training for builders.

NEEA drives regional home energy-use study
NEEA and its utility partners are conducting a whole home energy-use study of Northwest homes. The Residential Building Stock Assessment Metering Study (RBSA Metering) will measure 101 homes around the region for energy uses in the home and how they contribute to overall energy use, which will help inform future Northwest energy planning efforts.

Creating better performing homes
NEEA accelerates the market adoption of energy-efficient homes in the region through its Northwest ENERGY STAR Homes initiative. NEEA does this by partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and green building programs to negotiate increased energy efficiency specifications for new construction homes, developing a regional infrastructure for verifying and certifying energy-efficient homes, and providing regional marketing, recruitment and training support to the market. The initiative promotes homes that are 15 percent more energy efficient than current state residential building codes.
