NEEA Newsletter: Commercial Sector Update

The Northwest Power and Conservation Council’s 6th Power Plan projects electricity demand in the commercial sector to increase from 6,700 average megawatts (aMW) to 9,200 aMW between 2010 and 2030. More than 60 percent of that growth can potentially be avoided through energy efficiency. NEEA’s commercial initiatives help accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient products, practices and services within the commercial sector. NEEA’s commercial team works to educate market players such as building owners, architects and building contractors to increase their use of energy efficiency best practices, resulting in more business advantages and less energy used in the region.

Following are updates on what NEEA and partners are doing to maximize energy efficiency to meet the region’s future needs.

NEEA and market partners help commercial owners with deep energy efficiency retrofits
NEEA estimates that if 50 percent of building owners made energy efficiency retrofits to one-third of their existing floor space, regional energy savings could achieve just under 100 average megawatts (aMW) by 2025. Through NEEA initiatives and utility incentives, owners will be renovating properties to use less energy, offer more comfort and higher asset values.   more >>

New videos highlight “Night Walks” as powerful practice for building operators and managers
For the majority of the year, when the sun sets, many commercial buildings are unoccupied. How do building systems truly operate during this time? And how can operators identify how buildings operate during off-peak times? NEEA’s BetterBricks’ Night Walk videos illustrate techniques building owners can use to save energy during off hours.   more >>

Meet Elaine Miller: Utility and marketing experience drives Commercial Lighting Initiative
Commercial lighting offers the region the largest potential commercial sector savings, comprising approximately 43 percent of the total commercial electric load but getting those savings, especially because of changes to the federal standard for the manufacturing of T-12 linear fluorescents in mid-2012, will be a challenge. Supported by utilities, NEEA’s Commercial Lighting Initiative works to help develop the next generation of commercial lighting retrofit programs, beyond the traditional one-for-one retrofit project.   more >>

NEEA scores LEED-CI Platinum rating
Through collaboration with manufacturers and vendors, while taking its own BetterBricks energy efficient best practices to heart, NEEA garnered the highest LEED rating for its Portland-based headquarters.   more >>
