Variable Speed Heat Pump Smart Thermostat Findings

The Smart Thermostat Research Project is a regional collaboration of Northwest utilities, coordinated by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA), that seeks to develop and verify a repeatable methodology to estimate energy savings for smart thermostats based on performance metrics. The initial investigation included a small research component to understand the potential for savings from smart thermostats on variable speed heat pumps (VSHP) which was undertaken by Energy 350. This research included a market scan of available thermostats that were capable of both controlling ducted VSHPs and were likely to save energy over a viable baseline model. This report includes the findings of that market scan.
